Gesche Würfel primarily works in photography exploring the relationships humans have with their environment in urban places and in cultural and natural landscapes. She combines a wide range of influences from her background as an artist, urban planner, and sociologist to having lived in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Her photographs engage with the socio-political implications of spatial processes by exploring notions of geography, history, race, class, and gender.

In her most recent project, When Trees Are Dying, Würfel focuses on the impacts of climate change on U.S. forests using different photographic processes.
