Jimmy James Canales is an expanded media artist working primarily in sculpture, performance and installation. Among the themes that influence his work are the mediated sensorium, the construct of the real/symbolic/imagined body, and performing identity. Through participatory installations and wearable sculptures Canales extends, encloses, and interrupts bodies. His use of complex surfaces against gridded and repeating forms compound perception. The materials employed range from found and familiar to industrial and synthetic. Playful, dark, engaging and alarming, his work teases the notion of mind-body separation, the anxiety of obsolescence and self as shadow.
