Ramiro Guerreiro

*

Ramiro Guerreiro is presenting his most recent works under the programmatic heading Austerity – International Style – Spring/Summer 2016. They continue to examine central aspects of his creative production to date. The focus of his works lies on (urban) space – in particular with respect to the human body, architecture, and their interaction in social, political and economic contexts, asking questions about architectural functionalism and calling for a fresh dialogue with and about space.
Wedged (2015) is an extension of a work made in Lisbon in 2005 and consisting of 39 slides, in which Guerreiro uses his own body to occupy different architectonic spaces. By occupying public space in this way he highlights, among other things, ways of appropriation, but above all allows for re-evaluation of our perspective on urban space.
In the continuation of the work presented here, the artist positions himself in Berlin’s Hansa District, which is exemplary of the architectural genre of ‘International Style’.
D’Apres Terragni (2015) illuminates the interrelation of aesthetics and politics in our perception on the basis of prints, collages and drawings of the former headquarters of the Italian fascist party in Como, and poses questions about the powerful camouflaging effect of beauty.
Salò (2015) is based on the carpet from Pasolini’s film of the same name. The drawing on cotton can still be discerned below the subsequently applied paint and points to the processual nature of a project that develops form in space step by step. Guerreiro’s works call for a rethink of the space and the way in which we move within that space.

Ramiro Guerreiro is receiving a grant from the Fundaçao Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon.
