Gert Robijns

Belgium

Belgian artist Gert Robijns confronts us with a “super-reality” in his work: a universe that exists parallel to the one that manifests itself visually. In order to make us experience this world, Robijns analyses and distils various aspects of our reality. Images, sounds, objects, and our surroundings are reconsidered as singular, characteristic entities. Thus the artist creates an analogous reality, which, however, is only slightly displaced relative to our own. But precisely these slight dislocations, in which cause and effect, image and sound are disconnected, result in powerful, simple experiences. […]

Time and again Gert Robijns confronts the public with the question “what if…” presupposing the existence of “other” valid realities. Staging simple experiences, the artist helps us to interpret the intangible layeredness of reality. By bringing about a dialogue between our sensory experiences and reality, he raises the issue of the fragility and impotence of “now”.
