LABA Berlin: A Laboratory for Jewish Culture is an artist fellowship program bringing together creatives of all disciplines to be inspired by the study of classical and modern Jewish in the creation of art, dialogue and community. The works are ultimately presented in an exhibition and performance series based on a yearly theme. Since 2021, LABA Berlin has pushed the boundaries of what Jewish art can be and what Jewish texts can teach, while challenging perceptions of Jews and Jewishness in Germany. LABA Berlin is part of an international network that was first launched in 2007 in New York’s East Village with active hubs in New York, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and the Bay Area.

In 2024, LABA Berlin is hosting two programmes at Künstlerhaus Bethanien:

Mar’a’yeh: A Night’s Journey is an innovative, interfaith, and intercultural project, leaning into the laboratory concept that is inherent in LABA. The program is being organized in partnership with the Deutsche Islam Akademie.

Mar‘a’yeh invites Berlin-based artists of Jewish and Muslim heritage to participate in a year of exchange, conversation, and co-creation, centered around the theme of Night. The fellows share an immersive experience in the world of Jewish and Islamic texts as a source of inspiration for their art and dialogue with each other. Intellectual input, critique, and skills support is provided by a team of scholars, academics, social practitioners and artists of both faiths and backgrounds. The program will culminate in an exhibition and performance series in winter 2024/25.

In May, LABA Berlin is hosting its first Alumni Residency for Artistic Achievement awarded to LABA Berlin alumni, who have shown excellent artistic promise and development. The residency is designed to further propel outstanding artists in our alumni community in need of studio space and professional support. This year residency is awarded to Alma Itzhaky. The month-long initiative within Künstlerhaus Bethanien’s International Studio Program offers a unique opportunity for self-reflection, creativity, and lively dialogue between artists of various backgrounds. Itzhaky will present her work in an Open studio event on May 23rd.
