With her animated loops, Canadian net and media art pioneer Lorna Mills transposes everyday fragments from the Internet into new hierarchies of meaning. By exposing the motion difference of short found footage sequences, she makes an artefact of the digital compression her own. In the subsequent weaving of these ghostly distillates, pulsating collages emerge that blur boundaries between high-, pop-, counter- and subculture. The results are fluid portraits of a global society that is confronted with constant shifts in perspectives and timelines.

curated by Robert Seidel within the programme Phantom Horizons

The on-going screening series Phantom Horizonspresents digital as well as analogue works that question the paradigm of linear perspective, seeking a new kind of “status perspective” [Bedeutungsperspektive]. The latter was a development of ancient and medieval painting, in which the size of figures is determined by their hierarchical significance. Extending this approach using the methodology of deconstruction and the possibilities of contemporary film creation, the presented works open up multifaceted, unseen horizons.
