Klara Ravat

Pixel Jungle
Germany/ Spain, 2015, 3:26 min

For the experimental film Pixel Jungle Klara Ravat captured urban impressions on 35mm film. The grainy and associative film material was used to create an olfactory portrait of her native town Barcelona. Above the unsteadily passing horizon lines and the impressionistic colour mixing of film grain as well as print-rasters floats a layer of film base artefacts like scratches, glue marks and dust, which impede the viewer’s direct focussing. The olfactory impressions are translated into abstract compositions and amalgamate into a colourful dance of event chains. Ravant succeeds in a poetic rapprochement to impermanence and the challenge of its translation and conservation.

The on-going screening series Phantom Horizons
presents digital as well as analogue works that question the paradigm of linear perspective, seeking for a new kind of “status perspective” [Bedeutungsperspektive]. The latter was a development of medieval painting, in which the size of figures is determined by their hierarchical significance. Extending this approach with deconstructivistic ideas and contemporary possibilities of film creation, the presented works open up multifaceted, unseen horizons.
