Tanja Koljonen

Waiting for the Clouds to Vanish

Tanja Koljonen’s artistic position is articulated from within a play of image and text fragments, which she contrasts in order to open up new, associative spheres of meaning. Her working method is predominantly one of collage, montage and assemblage, which – as special cutting techniques – can convey different levels and styles of image/language simultaneously.
When Koljonen cuts individual words from collected newspaper articles and magazine and book texts, sticking things over, crossing out, or blacking out entire sections of text, making them unreadable, or removes all the words from the pages of books and shows only the punctuation, first and foremost she is extracting a text’s obvious information content. Instead, what becomes visible is an image following a new rhythm and a different structure, which deliberately cancels out or reinstates specific elements.
Under the title Waiting For The Clouds To Vanish Koljonen is showing a selection of works produced within the last year, which incorporate the relations of the pictorial and textual into temporal dimensions.

Tanja Koljonen lives and works in Helsinki. In 2014 she was a guest at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, holding a six-month fellowship from the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.
