Kajsa Dahlberg

-

Kajsa Dahlberg works with images, text and sound. She investigates the construction and mediation of narrative structures in the context of political representation, historical discourse and individual identity. While doing so, she enquires about interrelations between collective and individual forms of narration.

In Künstlerhaus Bethanien Dahlberg is showing her book project “Ein Zimmer für sich. Ein eigenes Zimmer. Ein Zimmer für sich allein. Vierhundertdreiunddreißig Bibliotheken”. The work is based on the German edition of the feminist classic “A Room of One’s Own” by Virginia Woolf, which was published in 1929. To create it, Dahlberg has made a compilation of reactions to Woolf’s text from readers by transferring all the notes, underlining or other handwritten comments made in all the copies of the book available in Berlin libraries to one single copy. The pages of this particular copy are now being shown in the context of an installation of glass-topped display tables, documenting part of the collective history of reception.

Another recent work is the documentation of a dramatic reading entitled “In Godot’s Waiting Room (I Godots väntrum)”, which ingeniously brings together the story of the characters Vladimir and Estragon from Samuel Beckett’s play “Waiting for Godot”, the diary of a feminist squat in Umeå in 1983, and the report of a legal case initiated by Samuel Beckett, who wanted to ban a performance of his play in the Netherlands in 1988 because all the parts were to be taken by women. Dahlberg has also edited a script of the reading especially for the exhibition in Künstlerhaus Bethanien, which is provided for visitors to read.
