The Falkenrot Prize winner in 2019 is Berlin-based artist EREZ ISRAELI. His exhibition Black Milk will bring together works from the recent past, some new works especially created for the exhibition, as well as an installation that will be created in situ.
In his multimedial practice Israeli undertakes an intense examination of the Holocaust, anti-Semitism and the indissoluble links between European and Jewish culture. In a striking, provocative way he examines collective responsibility, open and latent racism, old and new right-wing populism, but also the current political situation in Israel and Palestine.
Physicality, sexuality and stereotypes, in terms of history or of gender, play a key role in Israeli’s works. He opposes any form of oppression, exclusion or a culture of remembrance limited to nothing more than routines.
