Patrick Bernatchez’s ongoing cycle entitled Chrysalides (French entomological term for “chrysalis”) uses painting, drawing, installation, sound, film, video and photography. “Fashion Plaza”, an imposing shopping centre in Montreal’s Mile End district, is a constant source of inspiration for the artist’s research on metaphoric metamorphosis and his reflections on the relationships between industry and power, and their impact on real life. Bernatchez’s works are generally oscillating between apocalyptic ambiance and a spirit of renaissance. His work has been widely exhibited in Quebec since 2000, and has recently gained increasing recognition in Europe and the United States.
