Starting from repetition and the movement of the of the hand as it paints, aiming to break the norms, leaving as much room as possible for impulsiveness, letting himself be affected by music, light, movement, the mood and the objects around him, Olaf Kühnemann creates a playful situation, a process of renegotiation,embarking on a quest of the boundaries of his technical abilities and personal expression. Kühnemann works impulsively. Everything derives from imagination, there is no clear narrative.

Similarly to constructing a new language, this is an exercise of creativity emerging from the dead-end situation of everyday studio practice and a challenge in terms of his own productivity and inspiration. Through a process of experimenting and transformation, Kühnemann “pulls the carpet under his feet”, incorporating other mediums into his paintings in order to transmit feelings and create an atmosphere of warmth and intimacy.
