When a line becomes a circle, 2013, Performed at Baengnyeongdo island, South Korea, one-channel HD Video, 6:46 min

What is the construction of experience today and how do we form our world from images and information? These are the questions underpinning the work of the Japanese artist Hanae Utamura, which draws on history, time and process as a medium to locate and trace the boundaries between thought and place.

Utamura’s works explore a dialogue of negotiation – between artist and environment, between intentions and conditions – which plays into the final outcome in a manner not unlike that of life itself.
