Axel Gouala, My niece and I working on our next residency application, 2020©

Axel Gouala is a French artist based in Strasbourg. His work recycles and recomposes familiar objects that order our living spaces. Often with humor, he makes small transformations, mergers and additions to these objects that end up reminding us of the creature-objects and other monstrous assemblages that are numerous in our commun imagination, from literary classics to ancient beliefs, such as the Japanese Tsukumogami, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the animated objects of Beauty and the Beast, the flying carpet or Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein… Through these mutant objects he makes obvious mechanisms of belonging, submission and addictions, realities and fantasies, ridiculous but implacable, with a certain dose of second degree romanticism.
