An Te Liu's installations and sculptures explore issues of function, malfunction and cultural coding in our built and hypothesized environments. Displacing objects and representations into altered contexts, the work offers revised readings of the functional, cultural and ideological logics, which are embedded in artefacts at domestic and urban scales. Using a variety of recombinant processes divergent themes and issues become linked - materials and devices associated with domestic hygiene are conflated with representations of high modernist town planning, while archetypal images of post-war suburban stability transform into dizzying patterns reminiscent of psychedelic and Op Art.
The fine line between the normal and the pathological begins to emerge as the work oscillates between object and model, reality and representation, utility and uselessness.

An Te Lius Installationen und Skulpturen beschäftigen sich mit Funktionalität, Dysfunktionalität und kultureller Zuschreibung in bebauten und virtuellen Umgebungen. Indem Liu Objekte und Darstellungen in veränderte Kontexte überführt, schlägt seine Arbeit neue Lesarten der funktionellen, kulturellen und ideologischen Logiken vor, die in Artefakten aus dem häuslichen oder urbanen Bereich eingebettet sind. Dank einer Reihe kombinatorischer Prozesse werden unterschiedliche Themen und Probleme miteinander verknüpft; Materialien und Apparaturen, die wir mit häuslicher Hygiene assoziieren, werden mit Darstellungen hochmodernistischer Stadtplanung zusammengeführt, während sich archetypische Bilder von vorstädtischer Nachkriegsstabilität in verwirrende, an psychedelische Kunst und Op-Art gemahnende Muster verwandeln. Die dünne Grenzlinie zwischen dem Normalen und dem Pathologischen wird nach und nach sichtbar, während die Arbeit sich zwischen Objekt und Modell, Wirklichkeit und Darstellung, Nutzen und Nutzlosigkeit bewegt.
