Gure Artea is the joint exhibition by the three prize-winners in the most important Basque competition for young contemporary art, won last year by José Ramón Amondarain, Jon Mikel Euba and Pepo Salazar.
The competition is organised by the Basque government’s Ministry of Culture and was first shown in the Artium, the Basque Museum for Contemporary Art.
The illustrations show a neon variation on the band name "Iron Maiden" by Pepo Salazar and a large-format drawing by Jon Mikel Euba, whom the Berlin public have known since his period of residence here as the guest of Künstlerhaus Bethanien.

SO is a new project by Markus Popp, realised together with the Japanese artist Eriko Toyoda. The British specialist publication "Wire" refers to Popp’s album as one of the CDs of the year in the two categories “electronic” and "regular". Popp’s double concert (60-70 minutes duration) is the SO project's Berlin premiere.

Sergio Belinchón considers architecture and urbanity from anthropological standpoints. Examining people's housing, he analyses lifestyles rather than architectonic styles, seeing a collective reflection of people’s way of life in urban buildings. Video material - originally documentary - is thereby converted until it demonstrates very specific aspects of human life in urban surroundings, while in his photographs, spaces are shown separate from their inhabitants in order to create a more eloquent image of people.

20th February – 7th March 2004, Studio 3
Marike Schuurman works with photos, films and videos which depict reality without aiming to be mere documentation. The artist attempts to track down the small, hidden irritations concealed behind the appearance of reality; those that question our familiar view of things. Her large-format photo works challenge the public to investigate subliminal picture content and to develop their own perceptual scenarios. In Schuurman’s Berlin exhibition, the viewer is thus confronted by the remains of a former Russian military camp which is being reconquered by nature in the midst of a biosphere in Brandenburg. A different, disturbing world appears from behind its obvious realities.

Künstlerhaus Bethanien offers its congratulations to Wilfried Hou Je Bek. The Dutch artist - who was a guest of the Media Arts Lab with his Quaternion.walk at the beginning of February - is this year’s winner of the Transmediale Award in the category "Software".

The Norwegian artist and curator Annette Kierulf is not only presenting an exhibition in Studio 227, but also a system of curating. As in the exhibition space "By the Way" in Bergen, of which she was co-founder, here it is also a question of the site-specificity of art works, of "connectivity" as the curator herself calls her aesthetic practice, which seeks local connections and thereby analyses local power structures. This exhibition, with works by Endre Aalrust, Øyvind Farstad, Thomas Kilpper, Janne Lervik, Beathe Rønning, Arve Rød/Stefan Schröder, will convert her curating concept – for which Kierulf has already received a curator’s fellowship from the Office of Contemporary Art Norway – into striking practice.

20th – 22nd February 2004, Studio 227
