From 24th February onwards, visitors to Studio 3 of the
Künstlerhaus will find themselves captivated by a sombre
kind of Romanticism. Iris van Dongen’s large-format drawings
jumble iconographies and symbols, and desires and moral judgements,
until finally all opposites and criteria are abolished, compelling
the viewer to seek his own standpoint. Death’s head symbols
appear repeatedly; sometimes they seem to evolve almost by chance
from the objects of the picture, sometimes they decorate the protagonists’
clothing. The outcome is a black Romanticism, whose ambivalence
develops largely through the various levels of drawing technique;
pastel chalks, charcoal and gouache are overlapped so that the
image only emerges as a final synthesis. Thus the abolition of
limits and of the temporal scale is also visualised in a very
material way.

Dr. Sample is actually the documentation of a casting
competition, which analyses the phenomenon of casting shows in
the entertainment media in an enigmatic way. For his video installation,
the Hungarian artist Tamás Komoróczky invited thirty
people to supposedly compete for parts in a financial advertising
spot. All the participants had to play the same roles and perform
the same actions, which were laid down in the script. The video
recording is an impressive document of all the participants’
need for self-portrayal, but it also permits the audience to witness
the way they overcame their inhibitions. Komoróczky supplements
his installation with other experimental video works, including
a real-time video-mix based on a concert by the group “Gitarre
und Schrank”, which was recorded before the beginning of
the exhibition. Creativity and improvisation are therefore examined
in a range of ways. At the same time, the works offer an ironic
interpretation of the medium employed in each case – and
pay homage to the sense of absurdity we all need for survival.

On 24th February, Gavin
Wade and Henrik Schrat are presenting a 30-page comic about Barnaby
Kaminsky and the day he opened the door to two missionaries who
were spreading the word of the glorious master Charles T. Russell.
The comic takes a detailed look at the true story of the Wagner
Corporation, the recipe for baked brain, and the connection between
Rosa Luxemburg and a very special way of thinking.
