Yunho Kim’s photography directs our attention towards the stereotype behaviour that emerges in predetermined situations and appears to manifest itself in perennial photographic motifs or genres. In the course of his project When Spring Comes, which is concerned with the wedding photography that is so extremely popular in Korea, Kim ascertained that all wedding couples always chose the same perspectives and backgrounds for their photos, even when they had to wait in a queue because of great demand and other attractive motifs would have been immediately available. In a similar way, Yunho Kim’s current projects examine the phenomenon of tourism.

In a personal experiment travelling all over Europe on Interrail, the artist investigated the question of why people, as tourists, dash from one place to the next only to take home the same amateur photographs, e.g. of the Eiffel Tower, Brandenburg Gate or Tower Bridge. Kim’s photographs of these places rob them of their magic, which is born to a great extent of the tourists’ expectant attitude and in their fantasies and romantic dreams. Thus what emerges is not only criticism of social stereotypes, but also self-criticism of photography: "I take pictures thinking about taking pictures." (Yunho Kim)

"Magic is made to fool the mind and not the eye."
(John Mulholland in 'The Magic Manual')

In search of a magic weapon, the Central Intelligence Agency commissioned John Mulholland, a leading magician, to produce an instruction guide in 1953. 'The Magic Manual' was to instruct secret agents in applying the art of deception during their clandestine operations. I set out to uncover this classified document. Just when I thought the manual was within reach, I realized I had been chasing my own shadow. And now my shadow is chasing me.

Bethanien, also located in Bethanien, will be presenting a further attractive programme of exhibitions and guided tours on the evening of 25th January.

The exhibition "normal love / precarious sex. precarious work" has been conceived on the basis of photography and texts by the 'maid of all work' Hannah Cullwick, which she created in London during the second half of the 19th century.
Starting out from her historical self-staging of a sexuality that spans all classes and genders, the participating artists are invited to investigate the relations between sexuality and work. In the process, the exhibition asks whether Hannah Cullwick’s desires and methods of self-portrayal have perhaps become universal today, as a paradoxical and by no means voluntary requirement in the field of work.

With Hannah Cullwick and Laura Aguilar, Oreet Ashery, Pauline Boudry, Alexandra Croitoru, Ines Doujak, Ghazel, Runa Islam, Kai Kaljo, Deborah Kelly/Tina Fiveash, Stefan Hayn, Klub zwei (Simone Bader, Jo Schmeiser), Ins A Kromminga, Zoe Leonard, Marth, Karin Michalski/Sabina Baumann, Tracey Moffat, Christian Philipp Müller, Henrik Olesen, Adrian Piper, Carole Roussopoulos/
