Pawel Ksiazek's art, although it comprises almost exclusively paintings, can be described as inter-media art, and the painter as an interdisciplinary artist. Such a definition is possible because in the process of creation, Ksiazek makes use of photography, films – both professional and amateur, music, found objects and sculptural-models which he often makes by himself before he starts working on a painting. In the pictures that result from this specific working process, the icons of high and low culture, the old and the contemporary, well known motifs from modernist painting and photographs found by the artist are mixed.
In his painting Ksiazek makes use of postmodernist strategies; his work is full of quotations, references, allusions, and borrowings. The artist uses these strategies consciously and intentionally, juxtaposing in his painting cycles high modernism with black metal music, Valie Export's and Marina Abramovic's work with films found in the Internet that show drunk youths making fools of themselves, as well as stills from German Expressionist films with modernist architecture of Central Europe.
Ksiazek's painting is like a palimpsest, a layered and stratifying text. It is a kind of conceptual inquiry and investigation which reveals a vision of history of art and its connection with life that is very different from the official one.
(Wojciech Szymanski) | | Obwohl Pawel Ksiazeks Oeuvre größtenteils aus Gemälden besteht, kann man es dennoch als intermedial und den Maler als einen interdisziplinären Künstler bezeichnen. Ein Beleg hierfür ist seine Arbeitsweise. Bevor er seine Malerei beginnt, nutzt er Fotografien, professionelles und amateurhaftes Filmmaterial, Musik, Fundstücke oder selbstentworfene Skulpturen. Am Ende dieses speziellen Arbeitsprozesses entstehen Gemälde, auf denen sich Hochkultur mit Popkultur, Vergangenheit mit Gegenwart, Motive moderner Malerei mit zufällig gefundenen Fotos mischen. Ksiazeks Malerei folgt postmodernen Strategien und ist voller Andeutungen, Zitate und Verweise. Diese setzt er bewusst und zielgerecht ein, indem er Black Metal Musik der Moderne oder eine Performance von Marina Abramovic und Valie Export mit im Internet gefundenen Jackass-Videos, auf denen betrunkene Teenager Unsinn treiben, kontrastiert. Das Werk Ksiazeks ist inhaltlich vergleichbar mit einem Palimpsest – einem immer wieder überschriebenen Text. Es ist eine Art der konzeptuellen Untersuchung und Ermittlung, von der eine eigene, alternative Vision der Kunstgeschichte und deren Bezugs zum Leben ausgeht.
