The Babel Tower

Hyun Na develops his works on the basis of historically authentic events, reconstructing them in documentary form in his own special way. He devises a link between the long past event and the current state of affairs in society and so creates a change in perspective that highlights the lack of structural distinction inherent in historical events and their representation. Na uses media such as documentary films, recorded interviews, and archive material in order to make the events he examines appear objective.
In Künstlerhaus Bethanien he is presenting his project The Babel Tower, which he has been working on since 2012: here, the artist puts forward the idea that the Teufelsberg in Berlin and the Nanjido site in Seoul – where rubble and refuse were once collected in heaps, and there is a park today – are modern analogies of the biblical Tower of Babel described in the Book of Genesis.
