Choy Ka Fai

The Choreography of Things

In his performances, video installations and graphic art works, Choy Ka Fai operates at the interface between art, technology and design. Fascinated by the human body and the technology of movement, he investigates patterns of movement in dance and performance. His current artistic production  focuses on the question of what happens in the body during a performance, and how it is possible to capture and depict movement. In his works he attempts to map out the different layers of movement and visualise them. By means of technology and electronics, he digitalises movement, dismantling it on the computer in order to reassemble, transform and transfer it onto another body. In this way it is possible to transfer movements by one person to another, or to transpose a movement generated by the computer to a human muscle, and so to make ‘puppets dance’.
In The Choreography of Things Choy Ka Fai investigates the body’s ‘narrative method’ in motion from neurological as well as artistic standpoints. In all three parts of his exhibition, primary attention is given to the representation and questioning of choreography and movement. What are the many things behind a movement? What do we think of when we contemplate dance? What moves a dancer during a performance? By means of a headset like those used for interactive computer games, dancers’ brain waves are measured and represented in the form of diagrams on a screen.
Choy Ka Fai creates a new dialogue on the portrayal and observation of dance.

Choy Ka Fai holds a fellowship from the National Arts Council Singapore in the context of our  International Studio Programme.
