An Oblique Fiction

Isabel Simões plays with the viewer’s perception by making slight interventions into existing spatial structures. Reinterpreting the omnipresent signs and traffic symbols that can be seen in Berlin, her anamorphic paintings, often deceptively suggest three-dimensionality. The construction of a somehow scenographic space can define a path in which the spectator is performatively implied. Reflecting about perception according to one’s place, these works deal with both the superfluous and material side of images, fiction, projection, illusion and deception. A book including recent works of the artist and an essay by Chris Sharp will be published for the exhibition (Portuguese/English).
