An Te Liu

Canada

An Te Liu’s installations and sculptures explore issues of function, malfunction and cultural coding in our built and hypothesized environments. Displacing objects and representations into altered contexts, the work offers revised readings of the functional, cultural and ideological logics, which are embedded in artefacts at domestic and urban scales. Using a variety of recombinant processes divergent themes and issues become linked – materials and devices associated with domestic hygiene are conflated with representations of high modernist town planning, while archetypal images of post-war suburban stability transform into dizzying patterns reminiscent of psychedelic and Op Art.
The fine line between the normal and the pathological begins to emerge as the work oscillates between object and model, reality and representation, utility and uselessness.
