Luminous Bud (Stalk), 2016, 78 x 68 cm

For the past few years my artistic practice has focused on light emitted or reflected off celestial objects, light that is increasingly becoming fainter due to the haze of light pollution. Through photography, sculpture and video I materialise the aged and endangered light of our nights – for instance light that started it’s travel towards Earth at the same time that Isaac Newton famously saw an apple drop in his orchard – to highlight humankind’s connection to the night sky, to show that darkness matters. Currently I’m exploring the history of the modern astronomical Observatory and its relationship to the ever increasing brightness of the night in the city.
